Meet the Dunderheads: Ira, Ella & Womple. The ill-fated remnants of a Montana family caught up in a madcap escapade: one that leads them the wrong way on a calamitous flight to Canada, and ends, thousands of errant miles later, in Mexico.
Their adventure begins when the teenaged Womple Dunderhead accidentally kills a friend, throwing grandmother Ira into a paranoid quest to escape. Ira is a chain-smoking near-mute who you can bet is as mean as she looks. It is she, though, who herds the brood into an ancient Ford Falcon and pilots their journey. Granddaughter Ella is a pretty if scruffy seventeen year old wrapped up in a world of sexy fantasy that’s just a hair off kilter. This is a girl who travels with a pillowcase full of headless dolls, and imagines romance with each gas station attendant before the crazy trio drives off without paying. Womple Dunderhead is cute, but dumb. At eighteen he’s almost a man, but with the bumbling innocence of Donnie Darko mixed with a lunacy all his own. Womple spends his time ducking the trouble that follows him everywhere, and dreaming of his missing father, whom Womple believes is a big-game hunter and adventurer due home any day now.
Held together by blood, this ridiculous threesome “is not quite with the ways of the world” as Ella says. Ira is aiming for Canada, but we see by the road signs that they are in fact heading south. Though they may not know where they’re going, the Dunderheads plow on at full tilt, learning lessons only by bashing into them. As they speed along the back roads from Montana to Mexico, misunderstanding most things and flattening the rest, the Dunderheads are soon wanted by the police in every state they travel.
Through a typically Dunderheaded series of mishaps, Womple becomes a prisoner in the trunk of the Falcon, and bumps quite literally into the skeleton in his family’s closet. The saga ends in the Mexican desert when Womple finally breaks free to avenge himself, his sister and the downtrodden everywhere.
